Mustang: An avalanche near Dhaualagiri Icefall Area over Kobang village in ward 2 of Thasang Rural Municipality, Mustang, has blocked the Boksikhola, a tributary of the Kaligandaki River.

Janak Raj Pant, chief district officer of the Mustang district, said that the avalanche from the Dhaulagiri Icefall blocked the river near Gurusangwe Cave, just downstream from the river’s source. The avalanche has obstructed around 80 percent of the river’s flow.

After the blockage in the river, people on the stream banks are requested to remain vigilant.

“While there is no immediate risk from the flood, residents of five to seven houses have been relocated to safer ground,” said Pant.

He also warned, however, of the potential for a flash flood downstream if the lake formed by the avalanche bursts.

Efforts are being made to evaluate the situation and control potential risks as soon as possible, according to district authorities.
