Kathmandu: The ruling CPN (Maoist Center) has announced its candidate for the chair of the National Assembly, Nepal’s upper house of parliament.
Narayan Dahal, brother of Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’, has been selected to contest for the chair of the upper house. The decision was made during a meeting of Maoist office-bearers held at the prime minister’s residence in Baluwatar.
The position of National Assembly chair became vacant following the completion of Ganesh Prasad Timilsina’s term on March 3.
Dahal’s selection is expected to receive support from the ruling coalition, as the CPN-UML and the Janata Samajbadi Party have agreed to back the Maoist Center’s candidate as part of an eight-point coalition agreement.
In response to the Maoist Center’s decision, the CPN-UML will now have to nominate a female candidate for the vice-chair position in the National Assembly, as per the coalition agreement.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has put forward Yuvaraj Sharma as its candidate for the National Assembly chair election scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
