Kathmandu: In what is shocking data, the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Office has reported a distressing toll of 88 lives lost in 5,865 road accidents during the first half of the current fiscal year. Alongside the fatalities, 148 individuals suffered critical injuries, while 4,438 others sustained minor injuries.
Punya Prasad (Saroj) Sitaula, Senior Vice-President of the National Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs, highlighted the vulnerability of two-wheeler riders in the Kathmandu Valley as a significant contributor to the alarming fatality rate. “The combination of high-speed motorcycles and scooters, coupled with pedestrians recklessly crossing roads, has resulted in the highest number of fatalities in Kathmandu,” Sitaula said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad Bhatta, spokesperson of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, highlighted the ongoing efforts to mitigate road accidents. “We have intensified awareness programs to reduce vehicular accidents in the Valley,” said Bhatta. “We are conducting stringent checks on alcohol consumption to curb drunk driving.”
