Kathmandu: Nepali climber Tenjen (Lama) Sherpa and Norwegian climber Kristin Harila achieved a remarkable feat on Thursday by scaling the world’s second-highest peak, K2, in Pakistan, completing their ascent of all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters in just three months.
Kristin and Tenjen have now broken the fastest summit record previously held by Nirmal Purja, who completed all 14 peaks in six months and six days.
Chhang Dawa Sherpa, the Expedition Director at Seven Summit Treks, confirmed that Kristin and Tenjen successfully reached the summit of K2 at approximately 11:30 am Nepal time on July 27, making them the fastest climbers to conquer all 14 peaks above 8,000m. “They have accomplished this extraordinary feat in just three months,” he stated.
“We are excited to announce the team of SST made a successful ascent of Mt. K2 (8611m). A team of determined international climbers and SHERPAS reached the top of the world’s 2nd highest mountain, located in Karakoram, this morning 10:45 AM,” according to Dawa Sherpa.
Kristin, accompanied by Sherpa, previously conquered Gasherbrum I on July 18 and Broad Peak on July 23. Earlier in their journey, they also scaled Gasherbrum II, the world’s 13th highest mountain, on July 15, and stood atop Nanga Parbat on June 26.
The duo completed all 14 8,000-meter peaks in just 92 days.
Their journey commenced with the summit of Mt. Shishapangma on April 26, followed by Mt. Cho Oyu in Tibet on May 3, and Mt. Makalu on May 15. On May 18, they successfully conquered Kanchenjunga, and on May 23, they reached the summits of both Mt Everest and Mt Lhotse.
The ambitious project to summit all 14 of the world’s highest mountains saw Kristin and Tenjen climb Mt. Annapurna on June 5 and Mt. Manaslu on June 10. They then scaled Mt. Dhaulagiri on May 29.
