Kathmandu: Centre for Social Change, a social think tank, and Nepal Institute of Peace, an organization working on human rights issues, jointly organized a policy dialogue program on the state of informal workers and cross-border migrants on Tuesday.
Representatives from the government, International Labor Organization, Trade unions, academicians and experts were present at the event.
A report by CSC titled “Under the Shadows of Informality: A Vulnerability Assessment of Informal Sector Workers of Nepal” was also launched at the event. The report presents issues, challenges and solutions to informal workers’ problems. According to the report, over 4.4 million Nepalis are involved in the informal sector.
“The issue of informal workers and migrants is talked about less in the media and other platforms,” said Ajay Kumar Rai, executive member at International Transport Workers’ Federation, speaking at the function. “This kind of policy dialogues must be held frequently, for they help in bringing awareness about the issue of informal workers and migrants.”
The event also saw a presentation on “Issue and challenges of cross-border migrant workers in Nepal”.
“The issue of informal workers and migrants are very important but they are less discussed,” said Prakash Bhattarai, executive director at CSC. “There are various issues related to informal workers and migrants that need to come out and concerned bodies must address them.”
