Kathmandu: Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has assigned 10 benches for hearing on all types of cases including habeas corpus on Monday.
A total of 298 cases have been scheduled to be heard today. CJ Rana has assigned five cases to his bench.
The hearing resumed on all sorts of cases from Sunday. The Supreme Court Justices had been refusing to conduct the hearing since October 24, calling for Chief Justice Rana’s resignation after allegations that he sought a share in the expansion of the Council of Ministers and that raised a question on the dignity of the judiciary.
Legal practitioners associated with the Nepal Bar Association (NBA) staged a sit-in at the main entrance of the Supreme Court today as well in a bid to stop CJ Rana. CJ, Rana, however, entered the apex court through the Office of Attorney General.
Meanwhile, police arrested those chanting slogans in favor of Chief Justice Rana. A group of youths on motorcycles had protested in support of the Chief Justice on Sunday as well. Security has been beefed up in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
