Kathmandu: Breaking his silence over the much-debated Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Thursday said the compact will be endorsed through the Parliament.
Speaking at a press conference in Kailali after returning from flood-affected Sudurpaschim districts, the Prime Minister reiterated that MCC is a grant, not a loan.
“MCC will be endorsed. False rumors have been spread. The compact clearly mentions that it complies with Nepali laws,” Deuba said. “They (MCC officials) have clarified that Nepali laws are more supreme than MCC. The issue has been already clarified.”
On a separate note, Deuba said the unseasonal rainfall has hit the Sudurpaschim the most. “We will bring a relief package immediately,” he said, adding that the grievances of flood and landslide victims will be addressed through immediate and long-term programs.
Stating that an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers has already decided to provide relief to the citizens affected by flood, landslide and inundation, he said this matter would be discussed once again after returning to Kathmandu.
In response to a question, Prime Minister Deuba said the World Health Organization has lauded Nepal for its success in vaccinating its population against coronavirus infection. He added that Britain and other countries have lifted the ‘visa restriction’ to Nepali nationals as the Covid-19 has been largely contained.
