Kathmandu: Around 99 percent of the wards of the local units of the country are at risk of some kind of disaster. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, there are 6,743 wards in 753 local units of the country, and out of them, 6,664 wards are at risk of some kind of natural disaster.
Most of the wards have been found to be at high risk of floods and landslides. The bureau filled out the census’s community questionnaire listing 16 risks of natural disaster, and around 63.3 percent of the wards at risk were at high risk of flooding.
According to the province-wise data of the country provided by the bureau, the wards of Madhesh province are at high risk of flooding, and Gandaki province is at high risk of landslides. Similarly, in Koshi province, out of 100 percent, more than 60 percent of the wards are at high risk of flooding, landslides, or both.
In Madhes, 79.9 percent of wards are at risk of floods, and 13.9 percent of wards are at risk of landslides. Similarly, it has been found that the risk of flooding in Bagmati province is 53.8 percent and the risk of landslides is 75 percent.
In Gandaki, there is a risk of flooding in 60.5 percent of the wards and a risk of landslides in 86.7 percent of the wards.
In Lumbini, 61.3 percent of wards are at risk of flooding, and 49.8 percent of wards are at risk of landslides.
Karnali has 53.2 percent flood risk and 84.5 percent landslide risk.
Similarly, there is a 70.6 percent flood risk and a 70.8 percent landslide risk in Sudurpaschim Province.
It has also been found that the risk of avalanches is lowest in the wards. Around 1.2 percent of the mountain region is at risk of avalanches.
All together, some 52.6 percent of wards are at risk of storm and wind, 36.7 percent of the risk of forest fire, 36 percent of the fire risk, 35.6 percent of the hail storm, 28.9 percent of flooding, and 24.1 percent of the risk of drought.
The risk of hail and lightning is in 35.6 and 33 percent of the wards, respectively. The risk of heavy rain is 6.2 percent, flash rain is 3.5 percent, landslides are 21.9 percent, and dry landslides are 36.5 percent.
The risk of heat waves is seen in 3 percent of the wards. The number of wards without any risk is only 1.2 percent.
