Kathmandu: Nepal ranks 78th in the World Happiness Report 2023. Ranking of happiness in this category is based on a three-year average (2020-2022). India is ranked at 126th position in the report in this category. In terms of happiness gaps between the top and bottom halves of each country’s population from 2020-2022, Nepal stands at 119th position while India stands at 125th position.
Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/281, proclaiming 20 March to be observed annually as International Day of Happiness, in 2012, World Happiness Report is being published every year. According to the report, country rankings this year are based on life evaluations in 2020, 2021, and 2022 and therefore all of the observations are drawn from years of high infection and deaths from COVID-19.
The report says that main analysis relates to happiness as measured by life evaluations and emotions, how they have evolved in crisis situations, and how lives have been better where trust, benevolence, and supportive social connections have continued to thrive.
In the 2022 World Happiness Report, Nepal was the happiest country in South Asia, ranking at 84th position, while Bangladesh was at 94th, Pakistan 121st, Sri Lanka 127th, India 136th and Afghanistan at 146th position.
