Kathmandu: As the Dashain festival gets underway, kites used to fill the skies over Kathmandu. However, due to rapid urbanization, a lack of open space in cities, and a modern lifestyle, the custom of flying kites at the beginning of Dashain has become less popular.
Local legends say that people fly kites to express their gratitude to the celestial deities, particularly the rain god Indra, for providing abundant rain during the monsoon to ensure a good harvest season.
