Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Pushpa Bhusal has been elected Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In the election held on Friday, Bhusal, a common candidate from the ruling alliance received 148 votes. A total of 93 votes were cast against the proposal to elect Bhusal as the Deputy Speaker. A total of 242 lawmakers were present at today’s meeting.
Bhusal was supported by NC, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajwadi Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, and Rastriya Janamorcha.
Another proposal to elect UML’s Bidya Bhattarai to the post of Deputy Speaker was not tabled after Bhusal secured her victory.
The post of Deputy Speaker was vacant after then Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahangphe resigned before the election of Agni Sapkota as a Speaker in January 2020 as the constitution requires Speaker and Deputy Speaker to be from different parties.
