Kathmandu: Former Vice-Chairpersons of the National Planning Commission (NPC) have demanded a proper investigation into questions raised over budget formulation while requesting the government to formulate a proper plan to tackle the impending crisis the country’s economy is facing.
Issuing a statement on Tuesday, six former Vice-Chairs–Prithviraj Legal, Dr Jagadish Chandra Pokharel, Dr Yuvaraja Khatiwada, Dr Dinesh Chandra Devkota, Dr Govindaraj Pokharel, and Dr Pushpa Kandel–have demanded with the Cabinet, Parliament and constitutional bodies to conduct an investigation on the issue stating that government activities are targeted toward inviting economic complexities.
They added that the government has failed to increase exports, ensure proper mobilization of foreign aid and loans, attract foreign investment, facilitate tourist arrivals, and ensure remittance inflows through formal channels to improve the depleting foreign currency reserves.

The former chairs added that the private sector, economists and former finance ministers, leaders, and media have been questioning the government stating that undisciplined activities took place during the budget formulation, and the main opposition UML has been demanding a parliamentary probe on the issue.
“All these activities indicate that Nepal’s economy is in crisis, the revenue collected is being misused and the government has failed to address the issues of inflation and its impact on people’s livelihood,” reads the statement.
