Kathmandu: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dinesh Thapaliya has said that local level elections should be declared within the third week of January.
Speaking at an all-party discussion organized by the Election Commission on Friday, CEC Thapaliya said that the election date should be declared soon so that the commission gets enough time for preparation.
“There are no alternatives to timely local polls. A 120 days mandate for the commission to hold elections is running out,” said EC Spokesperson Shalik Ram Poudel quoting CEC Thapaliya.
The Election Commission has proposed to the government to hold local elections on April 27. If polls can’t be held in a single phase, the commission has suggested holding polls on April 27 and May 5.
